A man known as Diablo emerges to head a drug cartel after the previous leader is imprisoned.
Sean Vetter and Demetrius Hicks are members of the DEA who are fighting an ongoing drug war on the California/Mexico border, they are most successful at it because of their edge of growing up on the street and being thugs converted to cops. The DEA busts one of the major players by the name of "Memo" Lucero and imprison him in the United States but then a major player named Diablo then takes over the business and now he is now the major player targeted by Vetter and his team. But when Vetter's wife is killed in a botched hit organized by Diablo, he seeks revenge against those responsible and in the process has to seek help from the imprisoned Lucero in order to catch Diablo. But in the process, Vetter and Hicks have to fight their way up the chain to get to Diablo but it's easier said than done when all Vetter can focus on is revenge…
…(minor spoilers) A Man Apart was one of those movies that seemed to have potential. The story of a man who goes on a mission to avenge the love that was taken away from him; sounded pretty good. With bad boy Vin Diesel at the helm, you had an action/drama that could've been…but wasn't. The story was good, the characters were mis-cast, and the more you watched the movie the more you started thinking how ridiculous the story was unfolding. At the very end of the movie, you find yourself saying "I can't believe he went all the way there just to do THAT!" Overrall, the movie isn't bad, but for me it was definitely a let down…
Director F.Gary Gray did not make any excellent movies so far but they show ambition not to show traditional formulas and that's very respectable.Or,better said,they take traditional formulas and he tries to give them some originality to separate them from all the movies with similar theme done(on all this thing I explained I did not count the crap of Be cool).For example,on The Italian job he showed the big heist with something of revenge and good characters.On A man apart,he shows the typical story of a cop looking for revenge but he put some original elements that made it better than a lot of craps.This film kept me very fun and it never bored me.The story sounds a cliché but the director and the cast looked for a bigger emotional impact and some realism which is not very common to see on a movie from this genre.I think that the director wanted to do a cop drama that follows the emotional state from the main character,at the same time,he wanted to show the complicated world of drug traffic.But the tones combination is not too good:the dramatic aspect is too shallow and the action scenes are too controlled and not too surprising.But the movie is not bad and,like I said before it's very fun.Vin Diesel has enough charisma and presence to make it fun but he's not a so good actor to express the drama this film needs.His character is beyond his capacity.A man apart is not a great movie but it kept me very fun and it never bored me.
Directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Christian Gudegast and Paul T. Scheuring, the movie isn't even worthy of former NFL linebacker turned straight-to-video action figure Brian Bosworth.
